Local Showcase: What Good Work Looks Like
We do not show anyone's jobs on this page. Instead we set out what a well-documented quote, a proper foundation repair and a correctly built patio base look like, so you can recognise them when they reach you.
A standard you can hold a quote against
Most home work is judged by the finished surface, which is a weak test, because the parts that fail first are closed up beneath it. We chose three kinds of work that Massachusetts residents often hire for and set out what each should show before any money changes hands. The photographs here are stock images that illustrate those types of work, not jobs we inspected.
A quote you cannot check line by line is a quote you are being asked to trust.
What to check in each of the three kinds of work
What should a well-documented quote contain?
Each line should name the work, the material by product or grade, the quantity and whether removal is included. A sound quote also states what is excluded, the start and finish window, how a change to the scope is priced in writing and the payment stages. One lump sum with no lines beneath it asks you to pay for a number, not for work.
How do you recognise a proper foundation repair?
The contractor should explain the cause before proposing the fix, since a crack filled without addressing the water or soil behind it tends to return. Where the problem is structural, look for a written assessment from a licensed engineer and a named method. Get the warranty in writing, with what it covers and for how long, and confirm who pulls the permit.
What does a correctly built patio base look like?
The base disappears under the stones, so ask for it in writing and look at it before the surface goes down if you can. A sound base is excavated to the depth the scope states, built up in compacted crushed stone, topped with a level sand bed and held at the edges by restraint. The finished surface should fall away from the house so water runs off rather than pooling.
How the three checks fit together
The quote is where these checks start, because it is the only document that exists before the work does. Ask the same questions of each one: what will be built, from what, and how it will be checked. If the quote in front of you does not hold up, the quote helper on the resources page works through the same ground question by question and ends in a plain recommendation.
